FAQs

McTimoney Chiropractors have been helping people for more than 30 years, over 150,000 new patients consult a McTimoney Chiropractor each year, the equivalent of approximately 8000 people being cared for by a McTimoney Chiropractor per day.

Chiropractic is a method of adjusting the bones of the skeleton to ensure correct alignment, joint function and mobility. In turn this allows your nervous system to function at its highest capacity whilst alleviating pain and discomfort. Chiropractors use their finely tuned palpation skills (touch) to detect the misalignments, these misalignments are then corrected by a series of specific adjustments, again using their hands.

Developed by John McTimoney over 40 years ago, and taught only at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Oxfordshire, the McTimoney method is known for its full body, holistic approach and looks at the body in its entirety rather than the area that is causing pain. The adjustments are gentle and precise ensuring maximum comfort. McTimoney Chiropractic is suitable for people of all ages from babies to the elderly.

The first visit takes approximately one hour. During this time your chiropractor will discuss the issue that has brought you into the clinic, along with any previous illnesses or conditions. The chiropractor needs to gain an understanding of your overall health and how you are using your body on a daily basis. If you are on any medications it would be helpful if you could bring a list to the appointment also. Your chiropractor will then run through a series of neurologic and orthopaedic tests to assess how your musculoskeletal system moves and your nervous system is functioning, detect whether further referral is indicated, and whether chiropractic care would be suitable. Before your treatment starts your chiropractor will talk through the results of the examination and the proposed treatment plan, allowing you to ask any further questions and decide if you want to proceed with the treatment. You may be required to remove some outer layers of clothing, a gown will always be provided but if you feel comfortable you are more than welcome to bring shorts and a vest.

If you are unsure if you are suitable for chiropractic care the clinic offers a free postural assessment where the chiropractor will go through a short assessment and talk through how chiropractic care can help. If for some reason the chiropractor does not feel that they are able to help you they will refer you to someone who may be able to assist you further. Feel free to call on 01789 294313 to make an appointment.

The number of sessions required is dependent on many factors such as the age of the patient, the extent of the injury, the duration of the injury and general fitness, health and posture but generally between 3 and 6 treatments is sufficient. Here at Abacus we work together in partnership with the patient encouraging them to take responsibility for their progress, we do this by recommending stretches and exercises and suggesting lifestyle modifications if needed. Many patients then choose to have check-ups, reminding them how to prevent any reoccurrence of discomfort, your Chiropractor will discuss this with you in more detail during your appointment.

Following a series of chiropractic adjustments you can expect to feel physical changes as your body realigns. Your Chiropractor will discuss what you can do to help yourself following a treatment and offer stretching advice and lifestyle changes if needed. If you have any worries or concerns during or after your session it is important that you discuss these with your Chiropractor.
