FAQ
Chiropractic is a statutorily self-regulated profession - that is, chiropractors, like doctors and dentists, must be registered with the government appointed regulator, the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). It is illegal to practice as a chiropractor without being registered with the GCC. In order to achieve registration, practitioners must graduate with either a Bachelors or Masters degree in Chiropractic and the names of the degrees may vary depending on the awarding University. Registration requires approved chiropractic qualification, current professional indemnity insurance and is subject to the GCC professional code of practice and standard of proficiency.
What is McTimoney Chiropractic?
A holistic approach to address the presenting problems and compensations adopted by the body. The gentle nature of the McTimoney method includes adjusting the bones of your body to improve the alignment of your skeleton, so helping the nervous system to work more efficiently. Chiropractic care realigns and rebalances your body to relieve pain and discomfort and increase mobility. Chiropractors do not use drugs or surgery to treat patients.

Is chiropractic treatment painful?
Generally, treatment does not hurt. Some patients report short lived discomfort, which quickly passes for most patients. You may be sore afterwards as your body adjusts to the treatment, particularly when the problem has been there for some time. Drinking water and taking adequate rest can help the healing process.
Does McTimoney chiropractic include cranial assessment?
Yes. Cranial nerves can be affected, particularly where there has been a difficult birth. Release of the head bones can help the child to settle more easily but any baby can benefit to ensure their nervous system is working to its maximum potential.
What kind of conditions can benefit from chiropractic?
In many people's minds, chiropractic is associated with the relief of back pain. Patients report that chiropractic helps with a wide range of neurological, skeletal and muscular problems. Chiropractic treatment is suitable for all ages from new-born babies through to the elderly.

Parents report that their babies and children have less infections, and sleep and behaviour improves.
Is chiropractic for me?
Abacus Clinic offers FREE 15 minute appointments with one of the team for a basic assessment and an introduction to McTimoney chiropractic.
Is chiropractic offered on the NHS?
You will need to ask your GP whether your local Primary Care Trust offers this. You do not need to be referred by a G.P. unless your private health insurance insists on this. We advise patients to check with their insurance provider before booking treatment.
