Case Studies

Many parents & also those with a medical background would agree that birth can be a traumatic process for babies. They would also agree that if something can be done to help these babies and children; then the earlier the better. Losing no developmental time, every moment in a child's life should be as carefree and fun as possible. They should be given every opportunity to function at their best.

Parental experience 1: Normal delivery: Six weeks my baby cried-Simple remedy.

As an experienced mother of seven children, I knew my new baby was not happy. With recommendation, I brought my six weeks old daughter to clinic, as she hadn't stopped crying since she was born. The delivery was normal, except my baby was born with a long cord tightly wrapped round her tummy. She hadn't been sucking properly or content since birth and cried constantly. Many health professionals had seen her, prescribing medication for colic from 10 days old. But nothing helped.

Reviewing the history & observing my daughter you suggested she was having a problem sucking. Probably at feed times, the baby quickly tired, as she was taking in far too much air, through inefficient sucking. The baby was in pain, and the colic medication was not helping - she cried uncontrollably, eventually tiring and resting only moments. The medication was possibly acting as an irritant. The assessment showed my daughter could not move her head evenly both ways, and her jaw and sacrum needed to be released. This was done with the lightest of touch, & she fed better straight away. She slept that night for first time between feeds and during the week became my happy gurgling little baby daughter. You said I was a very patient Mum, I say to you- Thank you.

Parental Account 2: Forceps assisted birth.

My baby was assisted into this world by forceps and had not stopped crying since coming home. I felt inadequate and when she was seen in clinic for her 8-week check she still had bruising and was very jittery and jumpy. Recommendation from my midwife led me to seek your advice.

Careful assessment revealed that the cranial (head) bones had not resolved, as they should. Full explanation described the process of release, which was very easy. The result was immediate success when my baby fed differently. Her sucking improved, as the rhythm changed, the treatment was so gentle.

Parent tale 3: Twin boys now nine years came at five years old.

My twins were delivered very early (pre-term) with other medical problems. The boys were very different, the smaller always more difficult to settle. The smaller one used to hang upside down and push his head along the carpet, as if he was uncomfortable. He had poor concentration and was very clingy to me, unlike his bigger, more confident twin.

He was found to have a problem with his cranial (head) bones and further down his back. His balance was tested, & I was surprised he couldn't stand on one leg. Following treatment & some exercises, his balance improved, and his confidence. He started taking more of an interest in sports like his twin. He stopped skidding his head along the carpet immediately. He is now a happy confident young boy with equal confidence to his brother. He is as competitive as his twin, & both boys are active in everything together. Both boys are seen regularly in the children's' clinic during school holidays and after a fall or accident. I make sure they get checked, as I now know how important it is to ensure a healthy maturing nervous system with correct protective bone framework.

Parent story 4: Twin boys - born pre-term.

I brought the smaller twin at two years old because he was failing to thrive, did not sleep and was not a good eater. He didn't like any type of lumps, & seemed to choke. He was delayed with his speech too. He was slower at everything than his more robust brother. My previous two children were strong & healthy; I knew something was not quite right.

I was reassured directly as he slept better after the first visit to the clinic. His problem was in the middle of his back - interrupting the messages of the nerve supply. It was amazing, he was able to poo more easily, and then slowly started eating better & gaining weight. It was just like his light had been switched on, he was more interested. His speech started developing, he had more energy, he was happier. And so was I. Thank you

Dads Account story 5: Toddler three years old - boy who banged his head whenever he was tired.

I brought my toddler because we were very worried. He banged his head whenever he was tired and irritable. He had initially been a poor eater and sleeper and was now head banging.

It was explained that often these types of children seem to grow out of one problem, to start another. It was explained that some children accumulate more problems, but of a different nature, these problems can trigger other problems, ultimately affecting all the family. Our family were affected by our sons sleep patterns & now his head banging episodes. Following several visits of gentle flicks to his neck, his head banging stopped. We wish we had brought him earlier, especially as he may have had a headache, & we might have enjoyed him more too.

Patient view 6: A 17 year old who was apparently just like that toddler.

As he'd grown his anger developed & grew with him; he threw objects, kicked people, upset & tested his family and could not settle at school. The day he visited Abacus he'd thrown a chair down the stairs. Assessment revealed the top bone in his neck was misaligned significantly which would have caused him great discomfort and treatment resulted in an amazingly gentle boy. Whilst under achieving during his school years, he now felt able to learn. He is currently training to be an interior decorator and loving it. No headaches, no anger!

Patient view 7: A 32-year-old riding instructor with back pain of 10 years.

I attended the clinic to address a backache, of long standing. The daily discomfort was finally affecting my riding. I had an excellent result and my riding improved. It is now rare for me to have any worry or pain and I no longer take daily medication for headaches, which I had for most of my life (I thought it was normal).

Apparently as an active rider I presented with classic sacro-iliac joint problem, which was exacerbated with riding. Following a short course of about 4 treatments, the backache disappeared & now I'm pursuing my active lifestyle and riding pain free.
I have also had my horse checked out, to ensure he is moving with ease, & both he and I seem to fit together better. I am really delighted both for my horse & myself. Thank you.

Patient view 8: An active Octogenarian.

If it wasn't for Chiropractic I wouldn't be as mobile as I am now, I originally went on my daughters recommendation to relieve symptoms of a stiff neck, which was resolved within a few visits. Now I go regularly for pro- active care and I recommend Abacus to all my friends.

Regular skeletal check-ups and re alignments can help every age and this lady was no exception. A very active Octogenarian - why not?

Patient Comments 9: An 86 yr old lady with ongoing pain.

I had sciatica for months and months and my GP recommended I try chiropractic at Abacus. I have not regretted that decision; professional, caring, my sciatica is cured and I go regularly to make sure I am able to enjoy all my great grandchildren.

Simple pelvic imbalance, a short remedy for a long-term problem.

Retirement to enjoy account 10: A 66-year-old man with a frozen shoulder.

I went to Abacus with what was diagnosed as a frozen shoulder following a work related accident some years before. Your professional assessment revealed my neck and spine as well as my shoulder had been affected in the accident. I am so glad I went as I can do everything again now and keep going back to make sure. Having both physiotherapy & chiropractic in your clinic was easy, convenient & a real time saver.
Often a presenting frozen shoulder has an underlying source of problem. With thorough assessment to ensure no other anomaly, realignment can resolve these long-term issues. With careful multi-disciplinary approach, a successful outcome enabled full active mobility.

Sports Injury 11: A 32-year-old golfer.

I never thought my passion for golf would affect my lifestyle. Following several rounds in a competition I developed low back pain, which did not go away. It was worse when I tried to pick up my two young sons. In the end following medication and an X ray showing a prolapsed disc I was referred to my chiropractor who has become my new best friend!

With careful assessment, realignment can help manage underlying spinal problems. Resulting in positive outcomes. I am back playing golf, with an improved swing too.

Sports 12: Tennis Coach

I had been in a car accident some 8 years prior to attending Abacus. Whilst I was very proactive, with self-care, I continued with stiffness & mid back discomfort. I was ill with either chest infections or colds every holiday. Following careful assessment, a treatment plan was discussed that made sense to me, a course of treatment followed, the stiffness was immediately a thing of the past. I have stopped having colds, & I am fitter than I have been for years. Enjoying my tennis more, & able to pick up my baby son with ease at the end of every day.

It was explained to me that correct alignment could help restore immune function. Well it worked for me! I am a convert; my wife and my baby boy go for preventative skeletal checks and chiropractic care when necessary.

Happy Account 13: Sciatica it was terrible. 52 years old feeling '90'

I had pain down my leg that can only be described as an awful toothache that never went away. I was really fed up, & restricted everything I did to try & help. The result was I became depressed, & was prescribed tablets to help. Well I just felt numb, but the pain was still there. My GP suggested I try Abacus clinic for help. I was very sceptical.
However I have to confess the telephone conversation with your receptionist put me at ease. Then when I came to the Abacus Clinic my chiropractor was so kind, caring, & gentle. With her explanation, reassurance & very gentle adjustment, I felt I was in good hands. She explained that the pain I was experiencing was a trapped nerve; the sciatic nerve, & with correct alignment this could be relieved. Following a short course of treatment she suggested as I'd had the pain so long, to consider seeing the resident physiotherapist to use her equipment & skill to help calm the irritation & hasten the healing process. All the appointments were made easily & with care at the same address, the physiotherapist was also lovely & knew what she was doing too. As a result within weeks of first attending the clinic, I was not only pain free, but fully mobile and picking up my life, without medication. I am so grateful to all the team at Abacus. I tell all my friends.

I am going to have a course of Pilates at your clinic to ensure I never get the pain back. I understand from my chiropractor that the Pilates instructor is also a fully qualified chiropractor.
She will prepare me to join a class when I am ready.
